Medium pressure (MP) drills normally used on powerpack systems operate at a specified pressure range of 12 to 16 MPa. In practice, drillers often connect too many drills to a system; this can cause operating pressures to fall to 8 MPa or lower. Another favourite is where waterjets are used for cleaning concurrent with drilling, with the same effect.

Eskom will supply up to a maximum of say 5 MVA; at higher consumptions increasingly punitive rates start to apply. It often makes it impossible to mine an economic tonnage with the industry fallback system – pneumatic systems to power drilling.

Gold1’s Modder E and Sub Nigel mines are steadily ramping up towards full production. Modder E is a new decline shaft, officially opened in 2009 and equipped with micro hydropower using pumpstations to power working areas. Hydropower was the natural choice due to limited power available from Eskom.
